‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s road from rehabilitation to goals with the Basque club

Thehe initial occasion Gorka Guruzeta competed in English soil, an young representing the youth squad against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at the English ground in fall 2015, he hit the target. On his next visit he took the field in British turf, against Sunderland two months later, he converted. The third time, against Pep Guardiola’s team soon after, sure enough, he repeated the feat. When he returned to the northwest to play against the Red Devils at the sports complex in that year, he did it once more. An excellent finish, also. “Truly,” he says, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve netted.” Thus the club did their duty: he was replaced.

“I got well angry,” the attacker admits, then chuckling. “I’m sure there’s footage. We went to play United and I performed well. They kept me out of the latter period: I was without a signed my contract, goals were flowing, there were lots of rumours, as you’d expect. No confirmation on Newcastle being interested, but I remember reading about Manchester United, the typical thing. It’s unclear how true it was, but had they contacted me, I would have wanted to stay at Athletic. I’m fortunate to be here.”

At Lezama, Bilbao, the early training is set to begin; after it, the short journey to the airport and another flight to England, this time to play Newcastle in the UCL on midweek. Mentioning that phrase lights him up. It has become a difficult season for the club, partially owing to the demands of their participation. Beaten in added time in the derby on Saturday, they have secured just a single victory of their recent league fixtures and lost against Arsenal and the German side in Europe. Yet, take in the big picture, the major occasions he’s experienced and future challenges, and a sense of thankful reflection within him.

In the three years since he had rejoined the team, Guruzeta has been a semi-final participant, stopped at the gates a final at home by United, and has boarded a decades-old barge along the Nervión river flanked by a huge crowd after winning the Copa del Rey, the team’s initial silverware in four decades. Now he is Athletic’s top scorer in the European competition, where they are unique and returning after absence in a decade. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he admits.

The player believed it challenging enough just to earn a spot and his assessment was correct. Born to the one-time rival player his father and a dedicated fan at the team he now opposes, Gorka is a graduate of Antiguoko, the San Sebastián club that produced Mikel Arteta, the legendary midfielder and Andoni Iraola. His move to Athletic came at seventeen but after his first-team bow in August 2018, he suffered a ACL injury, dropped, a drop in category and a call back before he could earn his place, making his comeback to enjoy the highlights of the club’s history.

“You go into the academy thinking you won’t reach the senior squad but each step you go through you’re persisting and you can see it getting closer. You get there but … departure is necessary.” He had limited game time in half a dozen appearances between his bow and February 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances with them and my knee gave way.

“A severe disappointment but I reflect on it as a turning point because it forced me to alter the outlook. Recovering from a long-term injury is hard, but it helps. You cultivate routines you didn’t have. Previously I was casual, but I would go to training and then return home, typical youth behavior. At the complex, you have everything, so do everything. Work, precaution. Get in the gym. Should your hips be uneven, work on that. With decent ankle function, improve it more. Every small aspect: execute them.

“At the top level you’re going to face physical challenges who have been in battles repeatedly. Extremely powerful. Seeing previous pictures: I had slender legs. So what happens, happens. Present-day images and the improvement is clear. The setback taught me. Sessions end, but further effort is needed. Everyone else is ready, really ready; no exceptions.”

Minutes are crucial. He left upset in that year, in his early twenties, dropping into the second division. During his Sabadell spell in the 20-21 campaign, he got three strikes in 40 games. During his Amorebieta stint in the following period, the he found his form. “Many experience this: loans, terminated contracts. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and when eventually they need someone where you play, recall is possible. You have to be ready. Upon the recall, an aspiration fulfilled. To then win the Copa del Rey, European football, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”
